An evening of performances with Deniz Ünal and Ebun Sodipo (previous One in the Other artist-led workshop conveners).
Ebun Sodipo
my body reminds us of water iv
*performance starts at 6:45pm prompt
Using the ghostly and meditative capacities of reflective surfaces, Sodipo speculates on black trans desire and thirst as instinctual drives, gesturing towards and stuttering out – in song, in movement, in text – an embedded and embodied knowledge of a configuration of being that can now only be felt, existing on the murky edges of consciousness, lost to sensible knowing destroyed in the encounter with the West. Sodipo’s performance is part of an ongoing body of work exploring liminal space, embodiment, transformation and grief first performed at Frieze Live 2021.
Deniz Ünal
The Healing Hands of Room 3 (or so I would like to believe)
*performance starts at 7:45pm prompt
In the performance and resulting installation The Healing Hands of Room 3 (or so I would like to believe), Deniz Ünal embodies conflicting and simultaneous desires between fear and being feared, visibility and invisibility, possession and exorcism. Ünal uses emotions as performative gestures to navigate the complex feelings and effects of trauma and its relation to fear and desire. The performance attempts to capture the transformative and healing potential of ‘acting out’ and role playing, navigating the space through language, interaction, touch and mark making.
What is left in the space are the giant hands of the room; as tactile, comforting and overbearing. A restorative gesture for the future.
This event coincides with our late exhibition viewing hours and the our café will stay open, serving a selection of wines, beers and soft drinks.
